Vein Treatment
EVLT EndoVenous Laser Treatment

Varicose veins are winding, bulging veins that are abnormally large and can become as large as 3 millimeters or more. These veins are not only unsightly, but can be a significant cause of discomfort, fatigue, restlessness, and swelling. With increased severity, these can even cause ulcerations and wounds in the legs, skin color changes, and phlebitis (vein clotting and inflammation).
Endovenous Venous Laser Treatment (EVLT) is an excellent alternative to the "surgical stripping "of a malfunctioning vein as previously described. This procedure is performed by inserting a small laser fiber into the target vein through a small needlestick near the knee. Local anesthetic is administered throughout the procedure. Once set, the laser is pulsed into the vein as the fiber is drawn out; this causes the vein wall to collapse and seal down. After the procedure is completed, a compression dressing is applied. The entire procedure takes about an hour and the patient will be able to walk immediately and go to work the following day. A compression stocking is worn for 3-4 weeks after the procedure to help the vein"shut down."
